The second quarter of 2022 (April – June) was not a record for the gaming market in the USA, far from it. NPD Group has unveiled data for that period and region and let us see that PS5 and Switches it’s the consoles best sellersalong with other information.
According to reports, in the USA there was a down 13% year over year in the second quarter of 2022. Specifically, spending in terms of content (games, subscriptions…) fell by 13%, while accessories lost 11% and finally hardware 1%. The mobile side also saw a decline, precisely by 12%. The only component that has grown is that of non-mobile subscriptions.
As for precisely the hardware, the best-selling consoles are Nintendo Switch, if calculated based on the number of units, and PS5, if calculated based on total spending (also conditioned by the fact that PS5 costs more than Switch). As always, sales are also conditioned by the quantity of units the company is able to produce.
“Rising prices in everyday spending categories like food and gas, the return of experiential expenses like travel and attending live events, declining new game releases, and continued capping of hardware supplies for consoles of new generation are all factors that probably contributed to the decline seen in the second quarter,” he said Matt Piscatella, game industry analyst at The NPD Group. “After a period of sustained growth, consumer spending continues to be above pre-pandemic levels. However, unpredictable and rapidly changing conditions could continue to affect the market in unexpected ways in the coming quarters.”
